The inaugural running of the Dogwood Classic, a new steeplechase racing & tailgating event, has had necessary details in place for a while like a date, time, location and website, but had been lacking a theme — until this week that is.
The area’s newest spring tradition will take place Saturday April 6th at Colonial Downs and will feature five steeplechase races on the Secretariat Turf Course in conjunction with tailgating along the rail on the outer 1 ¼ mile dirt track.
Thanks to reader suggestions and contesting done via richmond.com, the theme for the inaugural Dogwood Classic is “The Wild, Wild West”.
The winning theme was pit against four others in an on line poll for ten days. Other themes in the running were “The Rat Pack”, “Seersuckers ‘n Sundresses”, a “Masquerade/Carnival” and “Dogwood” themed tie-in. “The Wild, Wild West” theme was suggested by Blair Lownsbery of Richmond, who won a vehicle tailgating spot at the “Classic” as a result.
The winning theme received 28.8% of the total votes while “The Rat Pack” and “Seersuckers ‘n Sundresses” tied for second with 23.3%.
